Week 10: Photostory

Sorry to cut the deadline so close, I just got off the mountain.

My theme is, "A Walk in the Woods" and I wanted to capture what it felt like to go on a hike. This was a hike at White Rocks national forest area in Vermont I did this afternoon. I wanted to give viewers the sense that they were walking with me through the trails - they'd be looking at the trail and then shift attention to something else. Not everyone in the class is from Vermont, so this may be new to some people. I hope I can give people some insight into Vermont life!

The hardest part was picking these twenty. When I got home I realized I shot more than 130 photos for this project. These were the ones I felt worked best to tell a story.

Side note: check out the rock towers I came across near the top of the mountain. There were dozens of these things in this serene rock garden - at 3000' above sea level.

  1. I chose a similar story to tell and I concur, it was difficult to come up with only a sample of photos. I particularly like the added photo of the tying of a shoe - that helps to tell the story.

  3. I love the pictures of going up. It seems like you have pictures of everything that I would look at while hiking up the mountain.

I think that the 'story' would be more complete if you had some shots of coming down the mountain, maybe even packing up the car a headed home. I agree with Karen, the images of people (even parts of people) help to guide the story.

  4. It is the attention to detail that really helps to convey a story. Anyone can tell a story about a walk through the woods. It is the details that separate your story from the rest.

  5. Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I was really thinking about having photos going back down as Matt mentioned, but I was really after a climactic ending. I think the view at the top is a great way to finish as there aren't really any photos better than that.

In hindsight I wish I had more images with people. The third image where you see a person hiking the trail in the distance adds a lot to the narrative. I think I constricted myself by thinking I should only have pictures of nature. Now I see that the shoe, sign, and person add to the story. I wish I had more of those.

    1. You could use your Photoshop skills to place people in these images.…

    2. That is a fantastic idea - I think I'll sneak some people in. I don't know how I didn't think of that. Thanks for your input.

  6. These are fantastic. I have said it before, but it bears saying again, I am seriously jealous of the beautiful landscapes in Vermont. I too shot way too many photos, the ones I posted are just the tip of the iceberg.
