I chose to photograph this watch in a variety of different lighting. I was always told natural daylight is the best light source you could have, but after completing this I assignment I realize it depends on what you are going for in your image. For example, if you want a gloomy effect, natural daylight may not be the best option. I decided to use natural light, incandescent bulb (in two stages, warming up and fully on), natural light with a reflector, and the camera's flash. These are the results.

I like the variety of different lighting styles you used. The choice to try a green reflector was interesting since we haven't played with colored lighting before. I associate that color with reflections from a television or computer monitor. Were you going with a particular look or feel with this colored lighting?
ReplyDeleteI'm particularly partial to your first picture in natural daylight since the colors seem the truest, and it looks like an ad you'd expect to see in a magazine. I am surprised by how similar the final picture in which you used a flash looks to the natural lighting photo.
I am loving your subject on these, but even more I am loving the way you really worked out the lighting. I think the flash image would be fine if there wasn't that own area that is completely blown out on the front of the watch. Once that detail is gone, you can never get it back. I am interested to know how you made your green reflector.

It is so helpful to see the various lighting techniques, it really helps me (us) see the wide variety of options there are.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is the first one taken in natural light - it could easily be an advertisement for the watch.

Hey Ryan, these picture are great, i like the various lighting.
ReplyDeleteI really like the watch in the natural light. I like that there are multiple photos of the different lighting, it makes the first one stand out really nicely.
ReplyDeleteI like the homemade green reflector. How did you do it? I've wanted to try playing with different color light but gels are so expensive that I decided that kind of experimentation could wait. I'm also curious if you did anything to your flash and/or what your camera settings are on the flash photo. It may just be the subject, but it looks very natural.
ReplyDeleteIs that watch dead or did you wait till the hands moved back to a similar position?
Matt,
ReplyDeleteI was wondering if someone would notice that the battery died - good eye.
The reflector is a very sophisticated and advanced piece of technology: a three-ring binder.
