Week 2: Comparison

I found these two photos very interesting because they are almost the same shot, but the second photograph was taken a few inches below where the one on the top is. I think the angle you shoot at says something about the picture itself. For example, I think the bottom one looks more inspiring and prestigious because we are looking up at the birdhouse. Looking up at something makes it appear bigger and it totally changed the shot.
I like the first shot because red and green are complimentary colors so I think the red on the blurred background looks good color-wise.
Another difference is how the photos are framed. The bottom has the birdhouse in the center of the image whereas when taking the top photo I was trying to play on the rule of thirds and offset it a bit.

  1. I am a fan of balanced asymmetry, so I really liked your first shot of the bird house. I also like the contrast of the red against the green. With so much lush foliage in the background I feel like there is a story to be found here with this somewhat run-down bird house with its peeling paint out in the middle of the woods.

As for the second picture, you are right that looking up at an object often makes it seem larger. With these two photos the second image actually seems smaller to me because you were slightly farther away and the base of the bird house is wide enough that it covered some of its height. There is more light on this second image which, combined with the perspective gave a slightly more ethereal feeling to this image.

  2. I like the first as well, the lighting its better as well.
Good point about the story, it seems there is something to be said about the worn and tattered look in the sun up on a pedestal

  4. I like the second picture better - oh well I do like to be different. I like the tattered look of the bottom picture and I like how it was framed. I thought soft background made the red stand out in the image and found my focus was on the birdhouse itself. I too thought there was a story there and I found myself making up scenarios in my head. I did not know that looking up on an object makes it seem larger, I will have to see if I can make myself look taller by doing that!
In the top picture the red and green color definitely worked together but the bottom picture was my favorite.

  5. The first one is far more interesting, as the subject sits a bit off center and this gives the entire piece more motion. Your eyes want to move more and that creates the motion. I want to look at the foreground of the birdhouse, the back to the trees, and then I'll the birdhouse in as separate elements on my way back to it. In short my eyes are constantly moving over the first one. I do like the upward angle on the second one, but my eyes stay locked in the center when I look at it, and there's none of the motion that exists in the first one. In fact, if I try to look away from the center, I'm immediately drawn right back to it.
