Week III: Macro Photos

Well, as I began shooting with my Nikon D50, the lens broke. I'm not exactly sure what happened, but the aperture seems stuck closed and there is severe rattling coming from inside. I was forced to use my backup camera for this assignment.

Individual Photos: Note: I did not include all of these images in the collage

  1. The red basket weave caught my attention immediately. Clear and concise. The book opened was good and it almost seemed like it was right here ready to be read. I liked the different pictures of rocks and the contrast of color. The green colors seemed dominant when I tried to look at other photos. Maybe if the were placed a distance away from each other it would have been less distracting. All in all and great contrast of pictures.

  2. My backup camera is my iPhone, and I'm pretty sure that's not sophisticated enough to have a macro setting, so be thankful that you had a better backup to use. Bummer that your other camera is broken, though.

All of that being said, this work demonstrates a great use and understanding of the macro lens. You captured a wonderful mix of different colors, textures, and perspectives this week, and even though the subject matter is extremely varied the final collage composition doesn't feel completely random. The arrangement has a nice balance of intense and muted color pieces which compliment one another. In fact, I think many of these pictures are enhanced by being presented as a group.

  3. I like the way you used the wings of the moth to frame the chip in the wood. I do like that used a grid layout for your photos. In retrospect, I am wishing I did something similar. I am also liking all the texture shots you have. All of them are nice. I especially like the basket weave. It really stands out.

  4. Sorry about your camera, curious though what is your backup camera? The results were an overall balanced collage. I liked the open book picture the most the way you captured the lines on the edges of the pages, that stood out to me. I also was drawn to the photograph of the eyes of the horse or dog? I thought the grouping of the different subjects complimented each other. The interjection of the red basket and the red flower or silk worked to add a burst of energy to the piece.

  6. Sorry about your camera. =( I think you still did really well even without it. I love the picture of the book binding and of the strange green netted material. The one on the bottom right in very interesting too. You should post the full size versions! I can't for the life of me figure out what some of them are. =)

  7. You did a nice job with your collage, photos are situated so perfectly on the page despite different sizes etc.

I agree with Zora to an extent where she mentioned that the green is dominant; I had a different view of it though - the green pops among the more subdued colors.

I appreciate that you used a variety of subjects which adds further interest to your collage (where mine was all flowers...) Personally, as a dog lover, my eye went right to the photo of the dog - I feel like he was looking directly at me.

I also agree with Maria that it would be lovely to see the individual photos which would allow us to see more details.

  8. A very well balanced collage! I found the layout of the brilliant colors grabbed my attention instantly. The green netting, to the vibrant yellow lily and splash of pink all "screamed" look at me! Then my eye caught the softness of the natural wood to the coolness of the stones. The curious eye was one of my favorite.

  9. The colors in this collage are brilliant! Everything compliments each other in a way. I really like how you used the outdoors for this assignment, because the lighting made all the pictures come to life!

    awesome job!

  10. Thank you everyone!

My backup camera is an old Kodak believe it or not. I will post the rest of my photos this evening.

I tried to make use of natural light, but after I got home from work the sun was fading fast. I found a very big difference between fluorescent lighting and natural light.
